The Saved Records boss delivers a stunningly intricate mix that Highlights his ethos as DJ and label owner.

CD1, entitled simply ‘Balance’ is a subtle and expertly crafted mix that balances a plethora of diverse tracks, often three at a time, to create an expansive but well focused journey.

Infused with a true timeless quality, the mix was approached in a way that will enable it to sound as good in ten years time as it does today.

Individual records were meticulously edited one by one to provide the album with a fluid and natural flow, displaying a more heightened sense of musicality than we are often used to in dance music.

It’s intelligent arrangement really paves the way for an overriding sense of permanence that is so often missing in many of today’s compilations.

On CD2, Nic showcases the sound and ethos of his own Saved Records with a collection of records exclusive to the imprint.
Whilst keeping the focus on quality house music, the mix highlights the diversity within the label with a discernable collection of tracks that straddle various styles, atmospheres and tempos, many of which will be
available exclusively through Balance 021.

From deep and melodic grooves to stripped back bounce, rolling basslines, jacking beats and everything in between, the second disc truly emphasises the dedication to quality that has made Saved one of the most respected Labels in the UK and around the globe.

Think back to the reggae/hip-hop soundsystems sound of Smith & Mighty and Full Cycle’s drum & bass legacy, right through to today’s bass/ house innovation from Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything et al. Born and bred in the city, Jody Wisternoff’s 25-year musical journey has had connections to just about every aspect in one way or another and every last influence – both classic and contemporary – seeps into his refreshing debut artist album “Trails We Blaze”.

But while so many veterans lose their lust for musical discoveries, Wisternoff remains more inspired by new sounds than ever before. As anyone that listens to his monthly Intensified podcasts will know, the Bristolian’s finger remains firmly on the pulse of all that is classy and cutting-edge in electronic music – be it the classic Detroit techno of Carl Craig, the warm electronic grooves of Maceo Plex or the leftfield house shapes of Midland.

Back in 1986, a precocious Wisternoff’s started his journey by gatecreashing the finals of the DMC Hip Hop Championships at just 13 years old; later releasing a hip- hop track on Smith & Mighty’s Three Stripe Records label, gigging with the Jungle Brothers and getting interviewed by Tim Westwood. Three years later, he was controlling the 5,000-strong crowd as a DJ at the famous 90s rave Universe, before helping to pioneer the early UK rave sound as part of West Country breakbeat outfit Sub Love (with Full Cycle’s DJ Die, later a member of Roni Size’s Reprazent crew).

By 1993, Wisternoff had hooked up with fellow Bristolian and superstar DJ Nick Warren to form Way Out West. In the years that followed, the duo pioneered a cinematic progressive breaks sound – scoring a top 15 hit with “The Gift” in 1996. They have since notched up four top 40 hits and headlined Glastonbury’s dance arena. As remixers, the sought-after pair have touched up classics from Orbital, Inner City and Sasha.

Blending elements of house, nu disco, progressive, techno and bass, the upbeat “Trails We Blaze” condenses Jody’s personal journey through music into 12 diverse electronic grooves; referencing his classic and contemporary musical loves.

Representing Jody’s modern take on Balearic grooves, tracks like the “How You Make Me Smile” (feat. Pete Josef) and the nu-disco influenced “Just One More” are both soulful and sophisticated; perfect for balmy summer nights.

The album isn’t without its darker shades, though. Harking back to his years lost in Bristol bass bins, the hypnotic techno groover “95” and the hip-hop indebted “Red Stripes” both reference Jody’s love of vintage jungle, while reworks of the Pete Tong-endorsed “Starstrings’ and the Beatport number 1 “Cold Drink Hot Girl” update two of his most classic solo tracks.

A journey that lives up to its title, “Trails We Blaze” is as clean as a mid summer sky, but still captures the complex beauty and deep textures of little fluffy clouds.

Tracklisting:
With a back catalogue that includes some of the biggest club hits of the past ten years, including tracks from Skream, Benga, Redlight and Jess Mills, and a reputation for throwing the biggest parties around, Digital Soundboy’s position in dance history is assured. Today the label’s roster of Shy FX, Breakage, B.Traits, Youngman, Dismantle and Stamina MC are all successful artists in their own right, but first and foremost Digital Soundboy remains a family, one that plays, parties and produces together and together continues to break new ground.

The first officially released Digital Soundboy mix; FABRICLIVE 63 perfectly captures the carnival spirit of the label and its parties. From drum n’ bass to dubstep, dancehall to garage, via excursions into house and beyond FABRICLIVE 63 showcases the Digital Soundboy crew’s ability to bring together myriad genres and styles in the freshest way possible and create a pure party-starting selection. Mixed by Shy FX, B.Traits and Breakage, each separately choosing their favourite tracks before working on the mix together in the Digital Soundboy studio, FABRICLIVE 63 features a mix of exclusive dubs and upcoming releases from the Digital Soundboy family; tracks such as Zed Bias’ ‘Heavy Water Riddim’ and Dismantle’s ‘Warp’, classic anthems like Shy FX’s ‘Original Nuttah’, and the unexpected such as M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade ‘Body Language’. An inspired selection that will put a smile on many a face and a bounce in your step, FABRICLIVE 63 ducks and weaves its way across the musical spectrum, and like the label itself, refuses to be pigeonholed.

Forging a fantastic fusion of modern electronic pop, Human Woman are the new signing on Hamburg’s HFN Records. Originally hailing from Iceland, the band consists of Gisli Galdur Thorgeirsson of prolific Icelandic band Trabant, and producer Jón Atli Helgason aka Sexy Lazer. Now after the launch of their debut single, ‘Delusional‘, with its sensual, indie-dance roots and pleasing 80s/90s undertones, we see the pair expand their vision of modern electronic pop with a feel-good, rich and edgy album spanning 11 glorious tracks.

From the opening song ‘Einn Eftir‘, Human Woman make clear that their entertaining sound palette will consist of cleverly treated vocals, guitars and bass, synths, electronic drums and plenty of atmosphere!

The complex compressed beats of ‘Delusional‘ drop early on, and it’s a real grower, carrying a superb modern sheen, yet gracefully nodding to 90s indie pop and 80s electronica, we go on to find treats like the driving ‘White Knight‘, with its catchy refrains and sparse bassline-led groove, or the curiously titled ‘DDDI‘, which takes the listener further into bubbling, reduced electronics, sprinkled with melodic beauty and a pumping, raw swagger.

It’s clear that the duo‘s influences spread far and wide, but to fit them in with new acts like Kasper Bjørke and Trentemøller, or indeed classic names like Depeche Mode or even Unkle wouldn‘t be too wide off the mark. We are talking experienced musicians, with catchy, timeless lyrics and melodies; wrapped up into a top-class, radio friendly production.

The rough edges of ‘Great Woman‘ contrast nicely with the smoother housey vibes of ‘Love Games‘, which could be a strong contender for the club DJs out there, dropping into a spine tingling dub-timed middle before its sing-along finale.

As the album closes, and the full extent of Human Woman‘s talents and promise becomes apparent, we find more experimental moments like ‘Lazer & Magic‘, with its spaced out effects and retrospective, ambient house vibe, or the sci-fi futurism of ‘Sleepy‘, part dreamy synth pop, part epic shoe-gaze anthem. It’s really quite a shame that this end-opus actually comes to a halt, and will surely leave you grasping for more.

Human Woman is positive modern pop for the electronic aware, inspiring listening for travelling, for friends, for lovers, for living!

After a string of successful collaborations and remixes – including an ace on one of ours, Nicolas Jaar‘s ‘Space Is Only Noise’, we are delighted to present Dave Aju’s sophomore album, Heirlooms.

It’s always exciting to hear new music from Mr. Aju, as he consistently offers a fresh approach to the usual dance music formulas with an undeniable sense of soul and singular artistry. This is especially true on his new album, where Aju has really outdone himself with his most diverse, expressive, and personal work to date. Crafted with vintage recordings and instruments inherited from his late father, Aju taps into his roots and musical background more than ever on Heirlooms, taking us on a ten-song journey through past and present influences and a variety of moods, from proper heartfelt tributes to spaced-out bliss and straight-up funk.

Dave Aju uses his distinctive voice, a fixture in his engaging live performances and DJ sets, in various ways throughout the album – from inspired songwriting in the uplifting cosmic opener ‘Rise’ and the beautiful end of ‘Revealing’, to memorable character lines in the raw deep house cut ‘Away Away’ and soaring choral notes on the bass-heavy beatdown vibe of ‘Until Then’. Plenty of collaborators also appear on the album, including The Invisible Art Trio who bring the same p-funk-meets-free-jazz voodoo on the hypnotic ‘To Be Free’ that made their previous track ‘Be Like The Sun’ such a treat. Some fellow Circus freaks also join in as Jaw from dOP finds himself co-conducting vocals on the boogie train of ‘Caller #7’ and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts lends a hand on the skins for the party-starting ode to tequila “Ms Reposado.” The Sol Percussion Ensemble, who last worked with Aju on his brilliant Two-Tone EP, also make an appearance on the irresistibly warm Brazilian-flavored jam ‘Brown & Blue’, while the club-approved ‘All Together Now’ shines as a unique tech-disco hybrid and will also be released with a remix from Amsterdam’s own multi-talented mad scientist San Proper.

Heirlooms is a colorful, refreshingly varied departure from the everyday, rich with emotion and as deeply rooted as they come, offering yet another side of Dave Aju’s kaleidoscopic musical world to explore.

Tracklisting:
Lovelock is big 80´s production, infected discoid power pop, the kind of which would fit perfectly into the neon lit backdrop of stylish late 70’s film noir. “A brilliant and ballsy high gloss album” says Germany’s Groove Magazine and a serious comment on the current trend of 1980s music as heard in soundtracks to films like “Drive”.

Though his analogue cascades can approach prog-rock levels of complexity normally explored by his groundbreaking duo Zombi over the past decade, Moore’s affinity for smart pop melody and growing Italo-dancefloor sensibilities keep him out of any such stylistic ghetto. In fact, he has become a sought-after remix artist both under his own name and the Lovelock moniker in recent years, placing a club-ready stamp on tracks by Sally Shapiro (“Save Your Love,” Paper Bag Records, 2010), Camille (“Home is Where it Hurts,” Virgin/EMI, 2008), as well as recent singles by Washed Out and Brahms.

Artists far outside the dance-pop idiom have also tapped lovelock: he’s converted tunes by the Melvins, Genghis Tron, and Voivod into raucous, glam rock stomps and driving, Miami Vice chase-scene soundtracks. His original work – under both aliases – has found its way onto full-length releases (2007’s “The Henge,” Relapse), and on compilations assembled by Eskimo Records (Cosmic Balearic Beats, Vol. I, 2008) and Chromeo (DJ Kicks, 2009). Moore has released original material on the Mexican Summer and Kompakt labels and released Gianni Rossi – ‘Star Vehicle: Original Motion Picture Score’ limited LP on Munich’s Permanent Vacation.

Now prepare yourself for the full-length Lovelock release, ‘Burning Feeling’. The needle drops and a hyper-reality assembles itself suddenly before the mind’s eye. Polygonal structures accented with clean neon lines; computerized sequences firing with precision and synchronicity under a polished surface. These are the futuristic vistas conjured by the music of multi-instrumentalist Steve Moore. He is the rare, balanced electronic pop composer whose work is at once visionary and hopelessly nostalgic for the music of his youth: late ‘70s AM gold and that ubiquitous, synthesizer-driven pulse appropriated by everyone from New Romantics to prime-time TV theme songs throughout the 1980s.

Tracklisting:

05 New Age Of Christ
Now with over 170 single releases and 45 albums, plus the mix compilation series Back In The Box, The Lab, Nite:Life and Deep Sensations, NRK prepare to celebrate 15 years in the business with “Forever Underground”.

A 3CD package, “Forever Underground” collects some of the finest moments from the label’s career to date, and showcases the variety of sounds and trends within the house music scene over the last 15 years. CD1 features such hi-lights as Quentin Harris’ epic “Let’s Be Young”, the sensationally deep Charles Webster mix of Shara Nelson’s “Go That Deep”, Blackjoy’s awesome disco jam “Moustache” and Foremost Poet’s legendary call to the dancefloor “Moonraker”, plus truly memorable deep house cuts from Nick Holder, Sirus and Twisted Pair.

CD2 continues the delve into the NRK catalogue, opening up with perhaps one of the defining deep house records of our time, François K’s “Time & Space”, swiftly plucking another bomb from the vaults in Tom Middleton’s remix of Kerri Chandler’s “Bar A Thym”. The underground vibes continue with the luscious King Britt remix of “Innocent”, Nick Holder’s classic “Summer Daze” and DJ Q’s pounding and hypnotic “Superclique”. Throughout it’s 15 year tenure, NRK have always reflected the evolving sounds of electronic dance, and the trio of tracks that round off CD2 are some classic, analogue techno sounds from Paul Woolford, Ed Davenport and the legend that is Carl Craig, confirming that NRK has been a label that stands by quality underground music, regardless of the many sub genres out there.

CD3 is a bonus mix CD from NRK founder, DJ and producer, Nick Harris. With not an easy task to pick out a CDs worth of 170 releases and upwards to 700 tracks & remixes, Harris deftly programs and mixes some of the standout tracks from over the years along with various Dub Mixes, Bonus Beats and underground goodies from the vaults. And so, along with many of the catalogue favorites, Harris pulls out tracks and remixes from Spencer Parker, Pete Heller, Kings Of Tomorrow, Trackheadz, Joey Negro and Chris Lattner, creating the perfect mix to encapsulate NRK’s forward thinking music policy and ear for an underground dancefloor.
